The Comparative Study of Psychological Characteristics between the Patients of Neurotic Gastritis and non-Neurotic Gastritis

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the psychological characteristics of the patients of neurotic gastritis and non-neurotic gastritis, to provide the basic data on clinical diagnosis and management of the patients of
neurotic
gastritis.

Methods: Fifty-eight patients who receive endoscopic examination at gastroenterology clinic of Kang-nam Scared Hospital were conducted the five formulized self-questinaire which were Illness Behavior Inventory (IBI), Somatic, Cognitive,
Behavioral Anxiety Inventory (SCBAI), and Index of Self Esteem(ISE), Patients who were diagnosed as mild chronic superficial gastritis or have no clinical lesion (37, 63.8%) were categorized to neurotic gastritis group and patients who were
diagnosed as
erosive gastritis, hemorrhagic gastritis, reflux gastritis, gastric ulcer, or duodenal ulcer(21, 39.2%) were categorized to non-neurotic gastritis group.

Results: Neurotic gastritis group reveals the significant higher scale score level than non-neurotic gastritis group in ISE and SAI scale scores. In comparing the questions in each questionaire, ¡®Often I act more ill than I really am¡¯ in
IBI,
¡®I feel that people would not like me if they really knew me well¡¯, ¡®When I am with strangers I legs feel stiff¡¯, ¡®I experience a tingling sensation somewhere in my body¡¯, ¡®I feel numbness in my face, limbs, or tongue¡¯, ¡®I experience
chest
pains¡¯, in SAI and ¡®I try to avoid social gatherings¡¯, ¡®I try to avoid challenging jobs¡¯ in BAI show significant higher score in neurotic gastritis group.

Conclusion: The author investigate the several psychological characteristics of patients with neurotic gastritis. The etiological aspects of neurotic gastritis are influenced by psychosocial factor of patients, and there is need to further
study
about the personality characteristics of patients with neurotic gastritis with standardaized diagnostic tools.
